About
A major international transportation hub, operating a large, complex multi-terminal campus with extensive supporting infrastructure including fire systems, maintenance facilities and dozens of individually metered zones. With traveller volumes growing strongly year-on-year, the transportation hub engaged CardiEnergy to bring visibility to site-wide water consumption and identify where usage growth had become decoupled from traveller growth.

Issue
Water consumption had been growing faster than traveller numbers, but there was no clear visibility into which zones were driving the increase, how reliable the underlying metering was, or where genuine (versus traveller-driven) savings opportunities existed. CardiEnergy was engaged to deliver monthly consumption reporting and root-cause analysis across the full site.
Action
Water KPI & DMA-level reporting: Established monthly reporting tracking the Water KPI (litres per passenger) across all major DMAs, benchmarked against passenger growth and prior-year consumption. Unmetered "Delta" quantification: Identified and costed the gap between reservoir output and the sum of metered consumption — flagging it as the single largest lever available, worth an estimated €250,000 (14% of annual water spend) in FY2025 alone. Anomaly & root-cause investigation: Pinpointed a small number of recurring problem zones, including one driven by an infrastructure supply change that alone added an estimated €44,000 in surplus cost, and flagged abnormal spikes for verification against operational records. Metering health diagnostics: Mapped chronic meter failures across several zones that were distorting headline consumption figures, and recommended a targeted meter replacement and maintenance programme to restore data confidence.
Conclusion
CardiEnergy's monitoring turned an opaque, site-wide consumption trend into a prioritised, zone-by-zone action list, showing that the increase was concentrated in a small number of identifiable, addressable areas rather than being systemic. Several zones already demonstrated genuine, sustained improvement once flagged, including a 87% reduction in unregulated usage at one location and a reversal of a prior spike at another. This gives the client a clear, costed roadmap to convert those isolated wins into a site-wide improvement in water efficiency.
